EPS = Net Profit Available to Equity Shareholders ÷ Weighted Average Number of Outstanding Shares
EPS stands for Earnings Per Share. In simple words, EPS meaning in the share market is the portion of a company's earnings attributable to each outstanding equity share.
It is commonly used in fundamental analysis because it helps investors understand earnings on a per-share basis. Still, EPS should be interpreted in context rather than used alone.
EPS = Earnings available to equity shareholders ÷ Weighted average number of outstanding shares
Example (hypothetical): If a company earns ₹100 for its equity shareholders and has 20 shares, each share is linked to ₹5 of earnings.
EPS = Net Profit Available to Equity Shareholders ÷ Weighted Average Outstanding Shares
A company's share count can change during the year through new issues or buybacks. The weighted average reflects how many shares were outstanding over the period, giving a fairer EPS calculation than a single-day count.
| Type | What it uses | Key point |
|---|---|---|
| Basic EPS | Current (weighted) outstanding equity shares | Does not fully account for potential dilution from convertible securities. |
| Diluted EPS | Considers potential dilution | May include effects of convertible securities, stock options or similar instruments when applicable. |
Diluted EPS gives additional information about potential earnings per share if dilutive securities were converted or exercised.
A higher EPS does not automatically mean a better stock. EPS is one input among many.
Shows the earnings attributable to each equity share.
Helps assess how earnings performance looks on a per-share basis.
Investors compare EPS across periods to see how earnings per share have moved.
Used alongside other financial measures, not as a standalone verdict.
EPS can be compared:
Rising EPS may indicate increasing earnings per share, but also examine revenue, margins, debt, cash flow and share count. EPS growth is not a guarantee of future stock performance.
Hypothetical example for learning only.
| Metric | What it shows |
|---|---|
| EPS | Earnings attributable per share. |
| P/E Ratio | Compares share price with EPS. |
| Revenue | The company's sales / income generation. |
| Net Profit | Overall profit after relevant expenses. |
| ROE | Return generated on shareholders' equity. |
EPS can change even when net profit stays the same, if the number of shares changes.
Higher or lower profit changes the numerator.
More or fewer shares change the denominator.
Buybacks reduce shares outstanding.
Issuing new shares increases the share count.
Sales, costs and margins feed into profit.
One-time gains or losses can distort profit for a period.

EPS means Earnings Per Share. It represents the portion of a company's earnings attributable to each outstanding equity share and is widely used in stock analysis.
EPS = Net profit available to equity shareholders ÷ weighted average number of outstanding shares. For example, ₹10 crore ÷ 2 crore shares = ₹5 per share (hypothetical).
Basic EPS uses outstanding equity shares. Diluted EPS also considers potential dilution from convertible securities, stock options or similar instruments, when applicable.
No. A higher EPS is not automatically better. It should be read with revenue, margins, debt, cash flow, share count, valuation and industry context.
