About General Insurance Corp.Of India

The General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re) is the apex public sector reinsurance company in India and one of the largest reinsurers in Asia. Headquartered in Mumbai, it provides reinsurance solutions to direct insurance companies for property, marine, aviation, energy, agriculture, liability, and health, and is majority-owned by the Government of India.

Incorporated on November 22, 1972, under the Companies Act, GIC was originally created by the government as a holding company to nationalise and consolidate the fragmented Indian insurance market. It initially oversaw four public sector subsidiaries:

  • National Insurance Company Limited
  • New India Assurance Company Limited
  • Oriental Insurance Company Limited
  • United India Insurance Company Limited
Following the liberalisation of the Indian insurance sector in 2000, these four subsidiaries were delinked from GIC Re, allowing the Corporation to exclusively focus on the reinsurance business
