CANDLESTICK PATTERN GUIDE
The Bearish Engulfing pattern is a two-candle formation commonly studied after an upward price move. It occurs when a bearish candle’s real body engulfs the preceding bullish candle’s real body, potentially indicating increasing selling pressure. Its significance depends on the broader trend, market context, and subsequent price action.
A Bearish Engulfing pattern does not guarantee a price decline.
Explore the Pattern ↓Real body: the thick part of the candle, spanning the open and the close.
Shadows (wicks): the thin lines extending from the body to the candle’s high (upper shadow) and low (lower shadow).
The pattern is defined by the bodies, so the shadows can be any length.
Open is below close. The real body runs from the open (bottom) to the close (top). Upper and lower shadows may vary in length.
Open is above close. The real body runs from the close (bottom) to the open (top), and its lower boundary is at or below the first body’s lower boundary while its upper boundary is at or above the first body’s upper boundary.
The standard definition focuses on real bodies, not full high-to-low ranges. The second candle does not need to engulf the first candle’s shadows.
A bullish candle forms as the price closes above its open.
The next candle opens, then moves downward and closes below its open.
The second real body covers the entire real body of the bullish candle.
Both patterns require contextual interpretation, and neither guarantees a reversal.
| Candle | Open | High | Low | Close |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First (bullish) | ₹100.00 | ₹106.00 | ₹99.00 | ₹105.00 |
| Second (bearish) | ₹105.50 | ₹107.00 | ₹98.00 | ₹99.50 |
Open ₹100.00, Close ₹105.00 → real-body range ₹100.00 to ₹105.00.
Open ₹105.50, Close ₹99.50 → real-body range ₹99.50 to ₹105.50.
Why it engulfs: the second body’s upper boundary (₹105.50) is above the first body’s upper boundary (₹105.00), and its lower boundary (₹99.50) is below the first body’s lower boundary (₹100.00). The body range is not the full candle range: the shadows (wicks) are drawn as thin lines.

This tool checks candle structure only. It does not assess the preceding trend, volume, support and resistance, broader market conditions, or the likelihood of future price movements. It provides no buy or sell recommendation.
Commonly studied after a rise because it may indicate a change in short-term buying and selling pressure. It does not prove the uptrend has ended.
A pattern near a potential resistance zone may warrant closer examination, but resistance can fail and the pattern may produce a false signal.
Some traders examine whether subsequent candles sustain downward movement. Confirmation can fail and may occur after part of the move has already happened.
The pattern may appear often in choppy price action and may have limited significance without a meaningful preceding advance.
These are possible interpretations, not guaranteed outcomes.
No confirmation method guarantees success. Waiting for confirmation may mean entering after part of a move has already occurred.
Not every Bearish Engulfing pattern is followed by a fall.
The pattern is most often studied after an advance.
The standard definition looks at real bodies, not shadows.
Check that close vs. open and high/low values are read correctly.
Consider the market, timeframe, and nearby price levels.
Weigh risk, liquidity, transaction costs, and false signals before any decision.
It is a two-candle pattern in which a bearish second candle’s real body engulfs the real body of the preceding bullish candle. It is commonly studied after an upward price move.
No. It may indicate a potential bearish reversal, but the pattern can fail. The preceding trend, market context, and subsequent price action matter.
No. The standard definition focuses on the first candle’s real body. The second candle does not have to cover the entire high-to-low range.
Beginners can learn to recognize the structure and study its context, but should not rely on it alone when making trading decisions. Understanding market conditions, confirmation, and risk management is important.
